National Environment Protection (Movement of Controlled Waste between States and Territories) Measure

On 13 December 2013, COAG replaced its 22 Standing Councils, Select Councils and governance fora with a set of eight Councils and the decision saw the revocation of the Standing Council on Environment and Water. Work is currently underway to resolve how its existing work would be handled in the future. In the interim, this website is currently maintained for historical purposes and is scheduled for archiving.

A new website for the National Environment Protection Council is currently under development.

What's currently happening:

Public Consultation - draft minor variation to the National Environment Protection (Movement of Controlled Waste between States and Territories) Measure 2012

In late 2010, the NEPC made a Minor Variation to the NEPM to provide greater clarity, remove unnecessary regulatory burden and remove clauses that are no longer required.

In February 2011, drafting errors in the 2010 Minor Variation were identified. NEPC has commenced
a second Minor Variation to correct these errors.

Movement of Controlled Waste NEPM Goal:

To assist in achieving the desired environmental outcomes by providing a basis for ensuring that controlled wastes which are to be moved between States and Territories are properly identified, transported, and otherwise handled in ways which are consistent with environmentally-sound practices for the management of these wastes.

Desired Environmental Outcomes:

To minimise the potential for adverse impacts associated with the movement of controlled waste on the environment and human health.
